Currently the people in India, and so as well in Chittapur and Londa, are facing a long lockdown to mitigate the Corona Virus. Accordingly also the stitching workshops of our partner NGOs in which usually all the beautiful Jyoti products are manufactured are closed. The seamstresses are forced to stay at home. To ensure the occupation and thus the permanent income of the women anyways, we have thought of some products which can be produced at home without necessary equipment from the workshops.
incl. VAT, plus shipping[su_accordion][su_spoiler title="Description" icon="caret"]
One of these products the women can easily craft from at home during the lockdown are these beautiful Kanthas. Kanthas are quilted patchwork blankets, which are usually recycled from the women’s old or damaged Sarees in India. These bright and colourful quilts are very popular in Indian households and used as bedsheets or warm blankets. Instead of Sarees we decided to use our leftover materials from the workshop, which are sometimes unavoidable when cutting patterns for garments and too small to use them for other accessories. Unfortunately, the production of these beautiful quilts is way too time-consuming for the “normal” business mode, that is why we will sell the Kanthas in a very limited edition. We expect that each of the ladies in Chittapur will be able to finish one blanket during the lockdown. So it’s worth being quick!:) Please also have a look at the paragraph “Your contribution”, in which we explain the value of those special products.

The Kanthas are beautiful but at the same time a great deal of work. First the many small patches have to be sewn together to create a big blanket and then, the whole Kantha is quilted by hand with a lot of small stitches to fix the single layers, make the blanket even warmer and also more beautiful. For all of this the women work a couple of weeks for one quilt which are consequently quite expensive. At the same time, we want to offer you an affordable and fair price and decided to go for a flexible pricing model, based on solidarity. That means you have the choice between 3 options:
- Supporter: With your contribution of 150€ are all costs for material and wages for the seamstresses in India are covered. You are securing their occupation during the lockdown. Thank you!
- Friend: Your contribution of 200€ represents the actual costs of one Kantha. Those include material and wages in India, but at the same time overhead costs in India and Germany. You are ensuring the survival of Jyoti – Fair Works. Thank you!
- Visionary: With your contribution of 250€ you are not only paying the absolutely fair price for a Kantha, but additionally you are supporting us with a solidary extra of 50€. This helps us despite these challenging times to be visionary, to plan courageously and to move forward. Thank you!
