FIGHTING TEXTILE WASTE
jyoti - circular
In 2020, over 100 billion items of clothing were produced worldwide - twice as many as in 2005. At the same time, the useful life of clothing has decreased by 40%. Textile waste is therefore one of the main reasons why the textile industry is the second largest polluter in the world - right after the oil industry. Given these huge amounts of waste, we believe that it is no longer enough to produce fairly and ecologically sustainably. We are convinced that we need a circular system.
But what does that mean?
Jyoti Circular
The idea behind Jyoti Circular stems from the concept of the circular economy. The aim is not only to produce clothing under the premise of sustainability and durability, but with the intention of using it for as long as possible through good care, repair, resale and upcycling. If this is no longer possible, the products are recycled by being processed into new products or composted, thus returning them to the biosphere in an environmentally friendly way.
We have developed three approaches:
approach 1
Your Jyoti 2nd Hand Piece
Do you have a piece of clothing from Jyoti that you no longer wear for whatever reason? Send it back to us and we will sell it as a second hand product. Your piece will have a chance at a second life and you can choose between 50% of the resale value or a donation of the amount to our association. Would you like to return something? Use this form
approach 2
Prototypes & Unique Items Sale
Where there is planing, there are shavings - and that's the case with us too. Small errors sometimes occur in production, colors are mixed up or the cut is slightly changed. We never throw away the (beautiful) unique pieces that are created, as well as our prototypes from design development, but offer them to you in our shop at reduced prices.
approach 3
repair service
Does your Jyoti piece have a small hole or other damage? In our Berlin shop-studio we hold regular repair cafés where we help you repair or upcycle your clothes.
And Beyond
Durable design approach
Our clothes should be as unique as our body shapes. We have come up with some great tricks and tips so that you can adapt your Jyoti piece perfectly and even if your figure or owner changes. All of our trousers have a double fold in the length, extra allowance in the back center seam and an internal belt to tighten it.
we avoid waste wherever possible
When creating our patterns, we follow the zero-waste approach, so we try to use 100% of the material. Unfortunately, this doesn't always work due to complex shapes in the cutting process. If there are any leftover fabric scraps, we use them for patchwork products, small accessories or our jewelry bags. Even smaller scraps are processed on site, for example, into pillow fillings.
Biodegradable
Every item of clothing will one day reach the end of its hopefully well-loved and well-used life. To ensure that we close the loop here too, we only use natural materials. These can either be mechanically recycled or find use in another industry, such as insulation in the construction industry, and thus become part of the downcycling process. However, one option is to use only natural fibers, and this is very important to us. All of our clothing is biodegradable, meaning that it goes back to its origin, the earth.
