AGAINST TEXTILE WASTE

We are producing and consuming more and more textiles – and often using them for shorter and shorter periods. In the EU alone, around 5 million tonnes of clothing are thrown away every year.¹ At the same time, only about 1% of the material in clothing is recycled into new clothing worldwide.² We believe it is time to rethink how we produce and use clothing: moving away from a throwaway mindset towards a way of treating clothing that extends its lifespan – wearing it longer, repairing it, passing it on and using existing materials for as long as possible.

Jyoti Circular
The idea behind Jyoti Circular is based on the principle of a circular economy: using clothing, and the materials it is made from, for as long as possible. That is why we already consider a long lifespan at the design stage and focus on care, repair, resale and upcycling. In production, we try to avoid cutting waste as far as possible, and we turn the fabric scraps that still occur into new products. In this way, we aim to help our pieces be worn for as long as possible and existing materials to be used as fully as possible.
To do this, we have developed three approaches:
Approach 1
Your Jyoti 2nd Hand piece
Do you have a piece of clothing from Jyoti that you no longer wear, for whatever reason? We'd love for you to send it back to us, and we'll resell it as a second-hand item. This gives your piece the chance of a second life, and you can choose between receiving 50% of the resale price or donating that amount to our non-profit association.

Approach 2
Sale of Prototypes & Unique Pieces
You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs – and that's true for us, too. Every now and then, small mistakes happen in production: colours get mixed up, or a cut turns out slightly different. We never throw away the (beautiful) one-of-a-kind pieces that result from this, or the prototypes from our design process. Instead, we offer them to you at reduced prices in our shop.

Repair Service
Has your Jyoti piece developed a small hole or sustained other damage? In our Berlin shop-atelier, we hold regular repair cafés where we help you fix or upcycle your clothing.
And Beyond
Durable design approach
Just as our body shapes are unique, so too should our clothing be. To ensure you can adjust your Jyoti piece perfectly, even if your figure changes or it finds a new owner, we have come up with some great tips and tricks. For instance, all our trousers have a double hem in the length, extra seam allowance at the center back, and an internal belt to tighten the waist.
we avoid waste wherever possible
When creating our patterns, we try to use as much of the material as possible. Unfortunately, this isn't always possible due to the complex shapes involved in cutting. If fabric scraps are left over, we use them for patchwork products, small accessories, or our jewelry pouches. Even smaller scraps are processed locally into things like cushion fillings.
And What happens afterwards?
Even the most beloved piece eventually reaches the end of its useful life. That is why, when selecting materials, we already consider what will happen to them afterwards. We prioritize the use of mono-materials made from natural and plant-based fibers to facilitate future reuse or recycling.
